After all, having a pizza delivery is the most convenient way to satisfy one's hunger in any time of the day.
But before you dial any number or order pizza online, did you ever wonder about its history? Have you ever asked yourself who made your favorite pizza flavors? Well, I'm not trying to delay your meal but allow me to tell you some interesting facts on pizza.
According to some historical books, the earliest form of pizza was started by the Ancient Greeks. It is through their "pita" or bread covered with oil, herbs and cheese that pizza has evolved. Later on, other civilizations like Hebrews and Romans developed the recipe and came up with their own pizza versions.
Pizza Margherita, a type of Neapolitan pizza, took its name after a queen and not from a flower (Margherita in Italian means "daisy"). In 1889, during the visit of Queen Margherita of Savoy in Naples, was served with a unique pizza.
Created by Don Raffaele Esposito, a local tavern owner, this pizza resembled the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomatoes), white (mozzarella cheese) and green (basil). Since then, this kind of pizza was called Margherita to pay tribute to the queen.
Undeniably, many people from all over the world really fell in love with the delicious taste of pizza. In fact, in America, the month of October was declared as the "National Pizza Month" in 1987. Yearly, a Pizza Expo is held in Las Vegas which is said to be as the world's largest pizza only trade show. While in Sao Paulo, Brazil, pizza day is honored every 10thof July.
Okay enough about pizza history. Let's go to toppings. Toppings vary greatly reflecting different tastes and preferences. Yet, when it comes to ranking, pepperoni always makes it to the top while anchovies are always on the last.
For Aussies, toppings like barbecue, shrimp and pineapple are well-preferred in their pizza. Although, if you want some Asian flavor, try the Japanese pizza which is often served with squid and eel. Or spice up your taste buds with Pakistan's curry pizza.
